Few have struggled for recognition like Zambia’s Goal King. Godfrey Chitalu, nicknamed ‘Ucar’ after the long-lasting Union Carbide manufactured battery, held World Records for both the season and calendar year from 1968.

There are few players who can hold world records, African champions records and more at the same time for half a century without receiving the recognition that he deserves. Godfrey Chitalu is that player. The Zambian striker set world records for a single season, and for the calendar year twice – the only player to do so. So how good was Chitalu?

The first black man to play for Liverpool, Howard Gayle, wants to see Zambia’s Goal King, Godfrey Chitalu, honoured in Africa. “It’s time for the footballing community to honour and recognise what is an outstanding achievement in goal scoring, so that his name and his country can finally be added to the Halls of Fame of footballing greatness,” Gayle said.
