Alun was elected as the first Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales in November 2012. He was a Youth & Community Worker in the Butetown and Grangetown area of Cardiff before being elected to Parliament in 1987 as the Labour and Co-operative MP for Cardiff South and Penarth. During 25 years in Parliament he served as Deputy Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Wales, and was the first First Minister of Wales. He later became a senior member of the Home Affairs and Justice Select Committees, taking part in major inquiries into ‘justice reinvestment’, the changing landscape of policing, the city riots of 2011 and drugs policy nationally and internationally. He is a long-standing supporter of the search for truth in regard to the murder of Lynette White.
